Charity is a little girl full of curiosity, thirsty for human contacts, words and exchanges. She wants to participate in the life of the world. Unfortunately, however, a girl of the good English society of the 1800s must remain silent, not show herself too much, except in church. The adults around her pay no attention to her, her little sisters are dead. So Charity takes refuge on the third floor of her building in the company of the servants. In order not to die of boredom, she raises mice in the nursery, dresses a bunny, studies mushrooms under a microscope, learns Shakespeare and incessantly draws crows, hoping that one day something will happen. Thus begins the life of Charity Tiddler, a girl first and a woman later who will make freedom a principle of life and who in the name of it will subvert all the rules of Victorian life.
