Iskola a határon, published in 1959 is one of the most celebrated Hungarian novels. The title translates to "The School on the Border" which can be meant both literally - as the institution resides near to the Hungarian-Austrian border - and figuratively - the border between childhood and adulthood, between the "civilian" world the protagonists leave behind for an entirely different one with its own set of rules. The story is retrospective, Benedek Both, nicknamed Bébé tries to reconstruct the time he spent at a strict military school as a young boy in the 1920s. He doesn't only rely on his own memories but also the memoire of his close friend Gábor Medve, the two narrations often contradicting each other. The novel portrays how this repressive and inhuman environment affects the psyche of the children.
