The Tramp (Carlitos), first appeared in the 1914 short Kid Auto Races at Venice by Keystone Studios. Chaplin invented the character as he felt he needed more prominence as he was going to start acting for real. It was really an emergency, as he was afraid that Keystone's grand owner Mack Sennett would fire him. As after Chaplin's first appearance as the character was very successful, Chaplin decided to repeat the dose. Over time, Chaplin had used the character countless times without getting tired and also continued to do so in feature films. Many critics at the time said that if Chaplin played another character at that point, he would be lost. Anyway, much to his surprise, The Tramp became a great character and then the greatest symbol of silent cinema.
