My experience of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is that it’s a great tool for people who are interested in becoming more self-aware. It’s very rare that I see someone who is not at least a little intrigued by the idea of finding out about their personality. But when people do decide to go ahead and take the test, they find themselves in a quagmire of confusion and doubt. Some assume that their results will be ‘wrong’ because their results appear to contradict what they ‘know’ about themselves. Others assume that they must have done something wrong because their results don’t match up with what they ‘think’ about themselves.
I know that I sometimes struggle with these results, and that I would often wish that I could take a test that would give me a clearer picture of myself. The problem is that the MBTI doesn’t work this way. It gives you a result, but doesn’t tell you what it means. The test only gives you an indication of how you react to different situations, or to different types of people.
