The Rat personality type is ESFP, who, in our understanding of the Myers-Briggs system, is the “character who would rather be doing something interesting than sitting still and reading,” says Pauline Boss, Ph.D., an expert on personality types and author of The 16 Personality Types.

“Myers-Briggs personality types are based on four preferences. People are either more introverted or more extroverted,” she explains. “Then there are four elements: two for each preference. These four elements represent how we function and how we react to our environment.”

In the Myers-Briggs system, extroverts have an extraversion of one (E) and introverts have an introversion of one (I). These four elements create sixteen different personality types.

“The ESFP is a playful, fun-loving extrovert who is highly energized by social interaction with other people,” Boss says. “They have an extraversion of four (E). They are constantly excited about things that excite their senses and they are very social.”
