José de San Martín was born on December 12, 1778, in San Martín, a small town that is now a neighborhood of Buenos Aires, Argentina, but was then a part of Spanish-controlled Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata. His father, José Miguel de San Martín y Rojas, was a hidalgo, or gentleman, of Spanish origin. His mother, Catalina Manrique de Echagüe, was an aristocrat and descendant of a former viceroy, who had been executed during the Reconquest of Spain by the rebel Armada in 1485.
José de San Martín went to school in Buenos Aires until he was 13. He would not finish his studies, however, because his mother died in 1792, when he was a teenager.
