Miguel Arango is one of the best known personalities in the world of sports. He was born in San Salvador, El Salvador, and was taken to the United States in a bid to escape the civil war. He did not speak English at the time and was known for his temper. In 1968, he joined the American football team the University of California.
Miguel Arango was a star footballer in the early years of his career at UCLA. He played on offense and defense and won the 1969 Heisman Trophy. Arango also set records in his college career, becoming the first player to complete a pass and run for 100 yards in the same game.
Arango was drafted by the National Football League in 1971. He played for three seasons with the Washington Redskins and retired after a neck injury in 1974.
Later in his life, Arango became a coach, starting at Pitzer College where he led the team to a national championship. He then moved to Southern California where he worked as a head coach at Orange Coast College and Cal State Los Angeles.
