The name was coined by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) to refer to the new Big Bad personality type. This refers to a character in an RPG who has a previously established history of being an antagonist, but who has now been flipped to the side of the protagonist. Such a character is often referred to as a "villain", but they are not always villains in the traditional sense.
Origin
The name comes from World of Warcraft, where they introduced an NPC called Big Bad Brannfjord. A little later they introduced another NPC called Big Bad Craglorn. The second instance of the name came up when Blizzard was designing a dungeon called the Maze Engine, where they intended to have a boss named Big Bad Brannfjord.
