I spent the first 50,000 words of my life creating a fake person. She was a young girl, maybe around 16 or 17, traveling through the country with her best friend on a road trip to find some semblance of normalcy in a world where I was alone and scared every day. I made her into a character that I could control and she was my escape. Vonnegut went through much of his life as a military officer, and I imagined him coming up with childish schemes to save his sanity while he was in the middle of war.
I created the character of Lizzy because I needed to get my thoughts out on paper. She was my first and only character, but after a few years, she was able to stand on her own as a fully developed person.
