Question from the floor: In terms of raising girls to have confidence and self-esteem, what do you think girls need to know about their bodies and about relationships? How do we start the conversation?
Ellie Mack: I think it starts with taking care of ourselves. I think we do try to talk to girls about how they feel about their bodies; we try to tell them they’re beautiful, they’re sexy, they’re valued, they’re special. But I think we kind of don’t follow through with that message. I think we need to do a better job of making sure that girls know that their bodies are amazing and that they have value and that they can love themselves.
I think we need to do a better job of teaching them about consent, respecting other people’s bodies, respecting other people’s boundaries. I think we need to talk about sex more often.
