While in Starfleet Academy, Odo was able to befriend a young Jean-Luc Picard, who had transferred from the U.S.S. Enterprise-D to the U.S.S. Stargazer at the same time as Odo. The two became fast friends, and Odo was one of the few people to be able to get a rise out of Picard, who was known for being somewhat uptight and dry. (TNG: "The Bonding")
Odo eventually resigned from Starfleet Academy and joined the Maquis in 2364, shortly before the Federation-Cardassian War broke out. He took part in several missions with the Maquis, but he continued to follow his orders. (DS9: "For the Cause", "The Wire", "Shadows and Symbols")
In 2366, Odo left the Maquis and joined Starfleet in an attempt to find his own identity, making friends throughout the service.
