Samael Keene is the primary antagonist of the first three books in the series, but he is portrayed as an antihero in the fourth book.
He was born in a family of witches and wizards, and is a warlock and a powerful necromancer. He was a member of the Order of the Phoenix and fought in the Second Wizarding War. He is shown to be a skilled duelist, as he was able to fight against his elder brother, Barty Crouch Jr. without being seriously hurt by his elder brother's magic.
In the film adaptation, he does not appear as a major character as he is only seen in flashback, but nevertheless appears as a secondary antagonist. In the film, he is portrayed as an over-the-top, egotistical maniac who wants to destroy Harry Potter and rule the magical world.
