Researchers used functional MRI (fMRI) to investigate the reaction of the brain of 22 participants to a scenario in which they had to touch a box containing a small electric shock: some individuals were told that there was a very low probability that they would receive an electric shock, while others had a very high probability of receiving the shock; those who received a low probability were told that they would receive a shock of either 50 or 100 volts, while those who were told they would receive a shock of 50 volts received a shock of either 50 or 100 volts; those who received a high probability were told that they would receive a shock of either 100 or 200 volts; and those who were told they would receive 100 volts received a shock of 50 volts.
