Mitsuhide Akechi was born on December 10, 1763 in Edo Japan. He was the eldest son of Akechi Mitsuhide. When Mitsuhide was young, his father became very close with Hidetada Sanjō, the 4th lord of the Sanjō clan, and was granted control of the castle of Sanjō. Sanjō used his influence to have Mitsuhide made a minor official in the central government, and the Sanjō clan were able to gain more power over the Akechi clan.

Mitsuhide was not interested in politics or governing, but rather wanted to be a samurai like his father. When his father died in 1781, he became the head of the Akechi clan. He quickly gained control over the clan by killing his brothers, and used his position to make money through illegal businesses. He became infamous for his alcoholism and decadent lifestyle.

Akechi Mitsuhide, first called Jūbei from his clan and later Koretō Hyūga no Kami from his title, was a Japanese samurai general of the Sengoku period best known as the assassin of Oda Nobunaga. Mitsuhide was a bodyguard of Ashikaga Yoshiaki and later a successful general under daimyō Nobunaga during his war of political unification in Japan. Mitsuhide rebelled against Nobunaga for unknown reasons in the Honnō-ji Incident in 1582, forcing the unprotected Nobunaga to commit seppuku in Kyoto. Mitsuhide attempted to establish himself as shōgun, but was pursued by Nobunaga's successor Toyotomi Hideyoshi and defeated at the Battle of Yamazaki. The short reign of Mitsuhide is listed as the inspiration for the yojijukugo set phrase mikkatenka. He is still popular in present culture. A ceremonial activity was held on April 15, 2018 in Kyoto.
