Bias of Priene was a Greek sage. He is widely accepted as one of the Seven Sages of Greece and was renowned for his probity. He was born in Priene in Ionia around the year 570 BC; his father was called Toutamos (Heraclitus of Ephesus, frag. 39, Politics). He had made a special study of the laws of his homeland, which he codified, and devoted his knowledge of them to pleading for his friends, but without ever wanting to defend an unjust cause; he died pleading. Douris of Samos claimed that he was a foreigner. He wrote a poem about Ionia of about two thousand verses, to teach the best way to be happy.
