Cornelius Castoriadis [kɔʁneljys kastɔʁjadis][1] (in modern Greek: Κορνήλιος Καστοριάδης [korˈneːlius kastoriˈaðis][2]), born on 11 March 1922 in Istanbul and died on 26 December 1997 in Paris, is a Greek philosopher, economist and psychoanalyst, founder with Claude Lefort of the group Socialisme ou barbarie.

He devoted a large part of his reflections to the notion of autonomy, of which he proposed a particular conceptualisation and which he defended by elaborating a "project of autonomy", a project of society aiming at individual and collective autonomy, that is to say a "radical" democracy, which he opposed to heteronomy, constitutive according to him of religious and traditional societies, of capitalist regimes but also of the USSR regime.

His work testifies to the variety of disciplinary fields in which he was interested: epistemology, anthropology, politics, economics, history, the "theory of the soul", as well as psychoanalysis.
