    Born on December 8th, 1753, he was known as a man of letters and a political philosopher. He was also known as a prominent political figure in the Austrian court.

    His life was one that was filled with controversy. He did not hold back on his opinions. From his earliest days, he was a critic of the French Revolution. He was an advocate of absolute monarchy and the divine right of kings. He was an anti-Semite and an anti-Catholic. He was a strong supporter of the aristocracy and he felt that the people were not ready to govern themselves.

    His first book on politics and religion, “De l’esprit des lois”, was published in 1809. This book was published at a time when Napoleon was threatening to take over Europe and he felt it was important to write about the laws and order in government that would be needed to keep the peace.

    Joseph-Marie, comte de Maistre (French: [də mɛstʁ]; 1 April 1753 – 26 February 1821) was a Savoyard philosopher, writer, lawyer and diplomat who advocated social hierarchy and monarchy in the period immediately following the French Revolution. Despite his close personal and intellectual ties with France, Maistre was throughout his life a subject of the Kingdom of Sardinia, which he served as a member of the Savoy Senate (1787–1792), ambassador to Russia (1803–1817) and minister of state to the court in Turin (1817–1821).
