Wollstonecraft was a hugely influential writer, and her writing is very deep and complex. She has been seen as a feminist, a political thinker, a social reformer, an abolitionist and a philosopher. She was a very determined woman who wanted to be a writer from a young age, and she was a writer for a great part of her life.

Her writings on women’s rights, especially on education and sexuality, have been highly influential on later movements for women’s rights. She was a pioneer of the genre of popular fiction, and her stories were hugely popular.

She is most famous for her work A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792), which contains the famous quotation: “A woman is not born, but rather becomes, a woman”.

    What does this mean?

Wollstonecraft wanted to argue that women should have an equal place in society, and a place of equality to men, but that they should not be denied that place just because they were women.

Mary Wollstonecraft (27 April 1759 – 10 September 1797) was an English writer, philosopher, and advocate of women's rights. Until the late 20th century, Wollstonecraft's life, which encompassed several unconventional personal relationships, received more attention than her writing. Today Wollstonecraft is regarded as one of the founding feminist philosophers, and feminists often cite both her life and work as important influences. She was the mother of Mary Shelley, an accomplished writer and author of Frankenstein.
