Seymour Birkhoff was born on May 31, 1904 in Chicago, Illinois. He earned a Ph.D. in mathematics at the age of 22. His doctoral advisor was Alfred Tarski (1902-1983). Birkhoff began working at the University of California, Berkeley in 1929 as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics. He was later promoted to Professor of Mathematics upon being awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1933.
In 1941, Birkhoff was recruited to come to Harvard as a professor of mathematics and as head of the mathematics department. His research interests were in the fields of set theory and graph theory. He also helped develop an elementary calculus text for high school students. In 1944, he accepted an invitation from the University of California at Berkeley to serve as the president of the university’s Mathematical Sciences Research Institute. In 1946, he accepted the position of president at the University of Wisconsin at Madison.
