That’s why it’s so special when she tells us her story.
“I’m a girl who loves to take pictures,” she says. “I have lots of photographic memories.” What she wasn’t expecting was to become a photographer.
“I didn’t aspire to be a photographer. I thought I would be a writer. I’ve always wanted to tell stories. But I didn’t know how to do that,” she says.
When Ruka was younger, she took photography classes because she thought it would be fun. The course included an assignment where she would take a picture of herself, which she did, working up the courage to step out of her comfort zone. But she didn’t imagine that the resulting photo would become one of the highlights of her life after she was diagnosed with cancer.
Ruka didn’t think much about her health at that time, but she was diagnosed with cancer when she was 21 years old.
