    The Tainá is an indigenous people of Brazil that lives in the states of Acre and Amazonas. The Tainá live on the Purus River and its tributaries, the Juruá and the Japurá. The Tainá language is spoken by approximately 9,000 people, and it belongs to the Macro-Gê languages family. The language is spoken in the region of Juruá and Japurá and is considered one of the most endangered languages in Brazil.

    The Tainá people are divided into two large tribes: the Arara and the Marubo. Each tribe has its own territory and own distinct language. These tribes are part of the Acre-Juruá indigenous alliance, which speaks a dialect of the Macro-Gê language. The Tainá people consider themselves to be part of the Acre-Juruá group, and they refer to themselves as Arara and Marubo.
