Based on the 1971 novel by William Dale Jennings, the screenplay was written by Irving Ravetch, Harriet Frank Jr., and Jennings and directed by Mark Rydell. The film is also notable for being one of the few in which John Wayne's character is killed and the only one where he is killed by the main antagonist.
