As a result of the recent political climate and identity based violence in the Arab world, the proposed Arava project to connect the Dead Sea and Eilat began in 2008. The Arava cable system connects the two areas in the Negev Desert, making the connection between the two areas a possibility for the first time in history. Amongst the various possible uses of Arava Cable System, the project’s main goal is to support economic growth between the two locations and make the connection a possibility for more scientific research. The project was privately funded until 2013, when Israel’s Ministry of Economy , Trade, and Industry (METI) took over the project.

The reason why the Arava Cable System is so important is that it creates a possibility for infrastructure growth between the two areas. The scientific research between the two areas will make it easier to understand the geological map of the Dead Sea.
