He is a homunculus, a being created by a human alchemist who had a massive amount of alchemy knowledge and a massive amount of homunculus research. Izumi was created by the homunculus researcher Father (which was inspired by the real life homunculus researcher Doctor Aldo) in an attempt to make a homunculus with the best qualities of humans. Father created Izumi by using human parts (which included the child's body, blood, and skin) and alchemy, then he used his alchemy knowledge to further modify the child into the ultimate homunculus. However, Izumi was not able to develop any human traits; he was still an emotionless, cold, and cruel creature.
