David Bowie was born David Robert Jones on 8 January 1947, in Bromley, Kent, England. He is the son of David Andrew Jones (1911–1958), a Welsh decorator and barmaid, and Margaret Mary "Peggy" (née Hayman; 1911–1996). His mother had a singing career and was known as "Peg", while his father was a frustrated painter. They separated when Bowie was nine.
Bowie's mother was of half-Jewish, one quarter north Italian (Venetian), and one quarter Irish ancestry, while his father was of half-Jewish, one quarter Scottish, one quarter Irish and three quarters Welsh ancestry. The family name was originally "Bouwens", but Bowie later changed it to "Bowie" (pronounced /bəʊˈweɪ/).
