1) Stay current on current events, especially in your local area.
I almost didn't get this one because I wasn't really keeping up with news and current events. It's hard to know what's actually happening and what's not. I didn't realize that my hometown is only a couple hours away from a city with an ISIS headquarters and a terrorist event occurred here a few months prior. It may not be the same as what is happening in NYC, but it's still something to keep an eye on if you're in your hometown.
2) Take notes.
This is something that I didn't realize until I got into the interview process. You can read without taking notes, but for me, I didn't realize how much I was missing by not taking notes and how much I really wanted to take notes on everything. I found myself writing down things that I didn't even know I wanted to remember or knew but couldn't remember.
