As a teenager, Jōichirō Saiba was a normal high school student who had a strong interest in hacking and martial arts. As a child, he was a fan of the child prodigy scientist Chronos, calling him a "cool adult". As a teenager, he often broke into the school's computer system to hack into the system to have fun. His skills allowed him to hack into the system of the School District of Tokyo School, which led to an assignment from the police, who were trying to stop a terrorist group called the "Reapers". In the process of finding out information on the Reaper's plans, he discovered that Chronos was behind everything. He discovered Chronos' true identity as Chrono Cross and learned that he had been killed by Pascal. After a lengthy battle, Chronos is defeated by Cross and dies after telling Cross to find a way to save his father.
After Chrono Cross, Jōichirō becomes a member of the Japanese law enforcement agency known as "Section 9", which investigates paranormal phenomena.
