Dorcas Meadowes was an English painter, one of the first women artists to rise to prominence in England. She was born in London but spent much of her life traveling abroad. From the age of eleven, she studied painting, initially under the tutelage of her father, George Meadowes, a successful portrait painter. Meadowes' artistic talents were encouraged by her father. During an extended visit to Rome in 1764, she was taught by Pompeo Batoni, who was then at the height of his fame.
She exhibited two pictures at the Royal Academy in 1771, one of which, "The Death of Dido", was praised by Samuel Johnson. The following year, she went to Paris, where she was received with great acclaim. This led to invitations from the courts of Denmark, Spain, and Russia. She also traveled to Italy, where she received commissions from the nobility. After being widowed in 1778, she returned to England. She continued to exhibit her work up until her death in 1804.
