Ezran personality type is ENFP, and I was envious of him because he seemed kind and thoughtful and consistently positive and optimistic, and also because he had a girlfriend i.e. me.
It was a long time before I realized that the friendliness and thoughtfulness were probably a reflection of his particular personality type, and that his optimism was a well-honed skill.
After I came to this realization, I started to notice when I was being insincere in my friendships, and when I tried to be a good friend to other people in a way that felt fake. And it became a habit to distance myself from people who I could not relate well with.
Usually this distance was expressed in a variety of ways:
I would say what I thought they wanted to hear in order to have a relationship with them. I would say that I was fine when I really wasn't. I would ignore them because I didn't want to deal with their emotions or problems, or because I felt that they were too needy.
And then one day, I realized that the only real friendship that I could have required me to be honest with my friend about my feelings and problems, and to listen to their problems and feelings.
