    Lord Williamson is the son of the former Labour MP Dame Joan Ruddock, who is of Irish and Welsh descent. His maternal grandmother was a Jew and his paternal grandfather was a minister in the Church of Scotland. He was raised as a Christian and attended the Church of Scotland school.

    He was educated at West Heath boarding school and then New College, Oxford, where he studied law. He then read law at Jesus College, Cambridge, and was awarded a doctorate in law at the University of Cambridge. In 2004, he was called to the Bar by the Inner Temple.

    In 2004, he was elected as a Conservative Member of the European Parliament for Yorkshire and the Humber. In June 2005, he was re-elected as a Conservative Member of the British Parliament for Midlothian South, a constituency covering Edinburgh and East Lothian. He has been a member of the European Parliament's Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs since January 2007. He is a member of the European Parliament Intergroup on LGBT Rights. He is a member of the UK Delegation to the EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement Negotiations.

    Thomas Williamson, Baron Williamson, was a trade unionist and Labour Party politician in the United Kingdom. Williamson was born in St. Helens, Lancashire. His father was a glassblower, and Tom began his career working in the office of his father's union, the National Amalgamated Union of Labour. He became a full-time union delegate. In 1924, when it became part of the National Union of General and Municipal Workers, he was appointed as a district secretary. He became interested in politics at age 9 when his father took him to see Tom Mann speak. During the First World War, he served with the Royal Engineers. He first foray into politics was serving on the Liverpool City Council from 1929–35. At the 1945 general election, he was elected as Member of Parliament for the Brigg constituency in Lincolnshire. He resigned his seat in 1948, and the resulting by-election was won by Labour's Lance Mallalieu.
