Vladimir Korchnoi (born 21 December 1942) is a chess Grandmaster and former world champion from the Soviet Union.
Korchnoi was born in Moscow. After his father's death, he was taken in by his uncle, who trained him at home until he was 18, when he beat the world junior champion to win the Soviet junior championship. He then took on an assistant, Alexey Frolvich, who became his lifelong coach. Korchnoi graduated from Moscow State University in mathematics and physics. He lives in Paris, France.
In the 1960s he played in a number of international tournaments, including the prestigious Candidates Tournament (1965) and the World Championship (1975). In the latter tournament, he reached the final table where he narrowly lost to Bobby Fischer (1½–2½). Korchnoi finished equal first (11th overall) in the 1970 World Championship Tournament, but was eliminated on tie-break by Fischer.
