In my experience, there is a significant correlation between the kind of work people do and the type they are. I think this is in part due to the fact that what we do at work is, in a sense, our public face. It is who we are, and it is how we show the world who we are. It’s true for introverts as well as extroverts; in fact, I’ve noticed that introverts’ careers often take more of a back seat to their extroverted friends’ careers than vice versa.
In Walter’s case, he has chosen the most challenging career imaginable, and he has spent much of his adult life working toward that goal; his job becomes almost everything to him. But Walter isn’t a “loser” or “failure” or “failure-in-progress” because he is not doing what everyone else is doing.
