In a flashback to the days of the Joseon dynasty, Prince Tey (Choi Ji-wook) is the crown prince who falls in love with Princess Seonhwa (Song Yoon-ah) after bumping into her at the royal palace. They become engaged and plan to marry, but Princess Seonhwa's father, King Seonjo (Kim Sung-kyun), forbids it because he feels that she is too young. At first, Prince Tey does not give up on Princess Seonhwa, but he eventually accepts that he cannot marry her, as she is only a concubine to him and that he must instead marry a princess of royal blood.
Years later, Prince Tey becomes King Sukjong (Lee Seung-gi) of the Joseon Dynasty.
