"When I was asked, I said, 'No, absolutely not,'" she says. "I felt like I was about to be put into a position where I had to be subservient to a man. That I would have to be servile to him. And it just wasn't going to happen. He would have had to break my spirit."
Instead, she did something different, and it has changed her life forever. "I got really involved in an organization that helps the homeless," she remembers. "They were trying to get funding for renovating some homeless shelters. So I went to visit them."
