He was born in 1937, in Mostar, in what was then the Croatian province of Herzegovina. He entered Mostar’s Zemaljski University in 1953, only one year after the city had once again become part of Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Izetbegović is the father of Srna, the most prominent Bosniak politician of the past quarter century, who in 2008 became the first Bosniak to become prime minister of Bosnia-Herzegovina.
His brother is Muhamed, also a prominent politician.
Izetbegović’s mother was born in Sarajevo. Her father was a member of the Ottoman parliament. His grandfather fought in the Bosnian jihad against the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the late 19th century, during which he was imprisoned by the Turks who did not tolerate enemies of their empire.
As a student, Izetbegović was already active in politics.
Bakir Izetbegović is a Bosnian politician who is the current President of the Party of Democratic Action (SDA) and member of the House of Peoples since 25 February 2019. From 2010 until 2018, he served as the 6th Bosniak member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
