Bouchez-Roux was born in Luxeuil-les-Bains, Ain, near Colmar in Alsace (France) on September 29, 1829. He was the son of a lawyer and he received his early education at the local Jesuit school. He showed particular interest in science and math at an early age.
As a young man he was enchanted by the idea that the world was not the static place that the Church taught. He realized that all of nature was in constant motion and that the earth was not the center of the universe, as the Church maintained. The Church taught that humans were not the only living creatures on earth, but that God had made other living creatures as well. Bouchez-Roux believed this belief to be wrong and he began to talk freely with his friends about these ideas. Bouchez-Roux also became interested in alchemy, astrology and other occult practices. He began to write about his ideas, but his work was censored by the Church.
