Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović was born on December 22, 1966 in the town of Požega, located in eastern Croatia. Her father, Josip Grabar, was a furniture salesman and her mother, Marija, a housekeeper. The family was not very well off and Grabar-Kitarović got her first job at the age of 12 as a nanny for a wealthy family in Zagreb. Her first job as a secretary was with a doctor in Rijeka, which was a great learning experience for her. She soon began to work as an assistant to an accountant. She graduated from high school at the age of 16 and shortly after moved to Zagreb where she began working as an assistant to an official at the Ministry of Health. Soon after, she moved to Belgrade, where she worked as an assistant to the director of the department of culture and tourism. After working for three years, Grabar-Kitarović decided to study psychology. She graduated from the University of Belgrade in 1990 and soon after worked as head of youth guidance for the Ministry of Health.
Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović is a Croatian politician and diplomat who served as the President of Croatia from 2015 to 2020. Before her election as president of Croatia, Grabar-Kitarović held a number of governmental and diplomatic positions. She was minister of European Affairs from 2003 to 2005, the first female minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration from 2005 to 2008 in both the first and second cabinets of Ivo Sanader, Croatian ambassador to the United States from 2008 to 2011 and assistant secretary general for public diplomacy at NATO under Secretaries General Anders Fogh Rasmussen and Jens Stoltenberg from 2011 to 2014
