Tansu Ciller was born in Istanbul, Turkey on December 29, 1953. She is a lawyer and a professor of law. Ciller has been the Prime Minister of Turkey since 2003 when she was elected to the position.
Tansu Ciller's Political Career
Tansu Ciller's political career started in 1995 and she served as a member in the Parliament of Turkey from 1994 to 2002 and in 2003 she was elected to the position of the Prime Minister of Turkey. She served as Prime Minister from 2003 to 2007 and then she served in the position from 2008 to 2011. From 2011 to 2015, she served as the President of the Turkish Republic. In 2015, she resigned the presidency and became the Chairperson of the Republican People's Party (CHP). In November 2016, she was elected back to the position of the Prime Minister of Turkey.
In 2006, Tansu Ciller established a university in Ankara named after her. In 2011, she established a museum of Tansu Ciller in Istanbul that is a part of the Ataturk Complex.
Tansu Çiller is a Turkish academic, economist, and politician who served as the 22nd Prime Minister of Turkey from 1993 to 1996. She is Turkey's first and only female prime minister to date. As the leader of the True Path Party, she went on to concurrently serve as Deputy Prime Minister of Turkey and as Minister of Foreign Affairs between 1996 and 1997. As a Professor of Economics, Çiller was appointed Minister of State for the economy by Prime Minister Süleyman Demirel in 1991. When Demirel was elected as President in 1993, Çiller was elected leader of the True Path Party and succeeded Demirel as Prime Minister. Several reports of international organizations of human rights documented destroying and burning Kurdish villages and towns and extrajudicial killings of Kurdish civilians perpetrated by the Turkish forces during Çiller's regime of 1993-1996.
