The new prime minister, from a provincial political family in the wealthy city of Lahore, has little power to make or break a government that is struggling to overcome internal divisions and its own lack of unity after it was formed following the June general elections.
“General Raheel Sharif is a patient man and he knows the situation in the region very well. He would be more patient than the outgoing PM,” said retired Brigadier Javed Iqbal Cheema, former head of the Pakistani air force’s strategic planning cell. “His staff is more patient than the outgoing prime minister’s staff, who were impatient.”
