In 2011, he brought his comic strip “Habana el Amigo” (Havana, My Friend) to the web. The character’s name is inspired by the Cuban capital, where Hugo lived for much of his life. The strip follows a pair of mischievous brothers named Gabriel and Gaspar as they travel through Cuba, encountering many colorful characters along the way. His comic strip grew in popularity very quickly, eventually reaching more than 1.4 million readers a month, adding an anime-style twist to the story in 2013.
Hugo López-Gatell Ramírez (born 1969 in Mexico City) is a Mexican epidemiologist, author, and infectious diseases expert, who has served as head of the Undersecretariat of Prevention and Health Promotion at the Mexican Secretariat of Health since 2018. Since January 2020, he has also played a major role as a spokesman and one of the lead members of the task force addressing the COVID-19 pandemic in Mexico
