The son of a Colombian immigrant, he grew up in the working-class neighborhood of Logan Heights in San Diego, Calif., where he lived with his mother, three brothers, and three sisters. "My father worked really hard," he says, "but he was the one who had to clean up our messes. But he never complained about it because he knew we were his pride and joy and the only thing he had in his life."
He was a bright kid. His mother sent him to private school, and he loved school so much that, at 10 years old, his parents let him skip two grades and immediately start college. He loved it so much that when the family moved to the East Coast, he stayed in school and transferred to a local community college at age 14.
"I thought I was going to be an engineer," he says.
