    She was born in Poland in 1936, the youngest of three children. Her father was a doctor and her mother a nurse, and they taught her that medicine was a noble calling.

    Agnieszka attended the University of Warsaw Medical School and became a pediatrician. It was there that she met her first husband, psychiatrist Jan Fiedler. The two married in 1963, had two children and divorced in 1970.

    She married her second husband, novelist Robert Seidel, in 1972 and the two remained married until his death in 2005. Their daughter Julianne was born in 1974 and their son Adam was born in 1978.

    Agnieszka Holland’s career as a novelist began with The Child, which won the prestigious Booker Prize for fiction in 1981. Her novels have been translated into some 30 languages.

    Agnieszka Holland (born 28 November 1948) is a Polish film and television director and screenwriter. Best known for her political contributions to Polish cinema, Holland is one of Poland's most eminent filmmakers. She began her career as assistant to directors Krzysztof Zanussi and Andrzej Wajda, and emigrated to France shortly before the 1981 imposition of the martial law in Poland. Holland is best known for her films Europa Europa (1991) and her 2011 drama In Darkness, which was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 84th Academy Awards. In 2017 she received Alfred Bauer Prize (Silver Bear) for her film Spoor at the Berlin International Film Festival.
