Amenábar was born in Madrid, Spain, on July 2, 1966. As a child, his passion for cinema was evident. By the time he was fifteen, the then-14-year-old Amenábar had already directed his first film, a short titled "Tiempo". He made his feature debut with the feature film "Mundo de Fieras" ("Wild World"), which was shot in Spain. The film won the Grand Prize for Best First Film at the Montreal Festival of Films for Children in 1976, and was named to the National Board of Review's Critic's Choice List.
He made his first English-language film "The Mission" in 1993, which won an Independent Spirit Award for best foreign film. He then went on to make his second English language film "The Salton Sea" in 2004. Amenábar has produced the Spanish film series "La Trama".
