Amenábar was born in Madrid, Spain, on July 2, 1966. As a child, his passion for cinema was evident. By the time he was fifteen, the then-14-year-old Amenábar had already directed his first film, a short titled "Tiempo". He made his feature debut with the feature film "Mundo de Fieras" ("Wild World"), which was shot in Spain. The film won the Grand Prize for Best First Film at the Montreal Festival of Films for Children in 1976, and was named to the National Board of Review's Critic's Choice List.
He made his first English-language film "The Mission" in 1993, which won an Independent Spirit Award for best foreign film. He then went on to make his second English language film "The Salton Sea" in 2004. Amenábar has produced the Spanish film series "La Trama".
Amenábar's third English language film, "The Others" (2001) starring Nicole Kidman and Fionnula Flanagan, won the Palme d'Or at Cannes 2001.
Alejandro Fernando Amenábar Cantos (born March 31, 1972), commonly known as Alejandro Amenábar, is a Spanish and Chilean film director, screenwriter and composer. Among other honors, he has won nine Goyas and two European Film Awards. He has written or co-written the screenplays to all six of his movies and composed almost all of the soundtracks.
His full length films include Thesis (Tesis) (also known as Snuff) (1996), Open Your Eyes (Abre los ojos) (1997), The Others (2001),The Sea Inside (Mar adentro) (2004), Agora (2009) and Regression (2015).
