    Méliès was the youngest of three brothers. His older brother Léonard was to become a political cartoonist, specializing in caricatures of Emperor Napoleon III. His older brother Émile was to become the renowned Lumière Studios cinematographer.

    Méliès began his career as an Art of Moving Pictures filmmaker by making stop-motion animated films. He made his first film, "A Trip to the Moon", when he was 12 years old. His third movie, "The Voyage to the Moon", was released in 1895. The film depicts the first ever trip to the Moon. It was Méliès' first film with sound.

    Marie-Georges-Jean Méliès, known as Georges Méliès (; French: [meljɛs]; 8 December 1861 – 21 January 1938), was a French illusionist and film director who led many technical and narrative developments in the earliest days of cinema.
