However, I can say that The Master is not a good film. It is not even a tolerable film. The only good thing in it is the very end, when the movie isn’t about anything and just has a bunch of talky scenes of people talking and walking around a hotel. Otherwise, the movie is a mess. And I’m not just saying that because I think Paul Thomas Anderson is overrated. I mean, there are a lot of things wrong with The Master. But, let me start with the good things first.
The casting is, as usual, great. The cast includes Joaquin Phoenix (who is so good at playing crazy that he might actually be crazy), Philip Seymour Hoffman (who never seems to have a bad role), Amy Adams (who I think might actually be better than her role in The Master), and Jesse Plemons (who I feel like I’ve seen him in something else). The rest of the cast is full of unknowns (and some bad actors), but they all do their jobs.
