I felt sad for Frances, and happy for her; I felt emotionally drained, but physically delighted; I felt like I didn’t really know the girl, but that she was totally me; I was frustrated by my inability to communicate with her (and also by all the things that I did communicate); I felt like I was on the outside of her world looking in, but not really on the outside, because I knew there was so much more to it than what I saw; I was angry at the way she was treated, and sad for her; I was on my way home on the subway, feeling shitty about myself, when instead of nodding off to sleep, I looked up at the people around me and thought about how Frances had once looked at them—how she had looked at everyone—and understood exactly what they were thinking.”
