Durkheim identified three types of institutions with important roles in a society: a sacred domain, a secular domain, and a domain of social control. The sacred domain consists of institutions that can be thought of as being above the rest of society. These institutions include religious institutions, such as churches and temples, and sacred organizations, such as government and military organizations.
