In fact, Jungian types are often hard to sort out. What is a personality type? The idea goes back to the 19th century, when a German psychiatrist named Carl Jung studied the inner workings of the human psyche. He proposed that everyone has an unconscious mind, or “the collective unconscious,” which consists of archetypal images and ideas. These archetypes, according to Jung, exist in our minds and influence our actions and behavior.
Jung later came up with a set of four different personality types: extroverts, introverts, perceivers and judgers. Today, the categorization is based on Jung’s work and other factors such as physical and behavioral characteristics and experiences throughout life.
A Jungian type is characterized by a preference for greater or lesser awareness of the unconscious and its role in our decisions and actions. It also defines how we view the world and interact with others — particularly how we perceive and express emotions and how we interact with both rational and irrational elements of life.
