My mother’s father was a military officer. He used to tell me stories about the Korean War, which was fought between 1950 and 1953. I used to love listening to these stories and playing with my mother’s dolls.
Everyone in our village knew that my grandmother had gotten pregnant at the age of 14 after her relationship with an American soldier had broken up. When she was 17, she became pregnant with my mother, but she refused to have an abortion. She gave birth to my mother at the age of 19.
As a young girl, I was never allowed to eat meat, even though I begged for meat every day. I was told that if I ate meat I would get fat, and I would have a lot of pimples on my face. So I ended up becoming very small.
