Arthur Vance personality type is ESFJ, but the last time he was evaluated he scored as an ENTJ. His childhood was full of continual stress. He lived in a bad neighborhood with an abusive father, but was the favored child of his mother. When he was 12, his father was killed in an accident, his mother remarried, and his stepfather abused him. At 15, he left home to join the army, but was discharged after two years because of his poor health. He was diagnosed with manic-depressive illness, and tried several anti-depressants, but they made him gain weight. He spent most of his adult life in blue-collar jobs.
His wife, Sara, left him because of his bipolar disorder. She is now dating someone else, but has not physically separated from Vance, whom she still physically touches whenever she feels the need to reassure herself that he is still there. She makes him keep a gun around for this reason.
Vance has been married twice, once to a woman who was physically abusive, and once to a woman who was mentally abusive. The first wife was a physical abuser and an alcoholic. Prior to the divorce, she became pregnant by another man and had an abortion.
